Making a splash: quality, design & added value
Key points
- New Zealand has a tendency to overlook designers in the production process.
- Important that design is not viewed by industry as merely being an additive - New Zealand businesses will substantially benefit when design is viewed as fundamental.
- Most businesses in NZ are not aware of the value provided by design, although this is slowly changing. "Better by Design" is playing an important role in this area by providing assistance, courses, internships etc.
- New Zealand's difference is a design asset. NZ has a unique brand that opens doors internationally.
- Relationships are important - talk to customers about the products. Face-to-face meetings are a must, so New Zealanders must be prepared to travel.
- Important to take risks with design - place some faith in designers to add value.
- Design is all about feelings, ideas, communication - sell an experience to the consumer.
- There remains a need to promote the use of design. This could include encouraging design-graduates, businesses being willing to take on interns, and providing more education opportunities in this area for students.
- Encouraging greater use of design by businesses could provide opportunities for young and talented people to remain in NZ.
