Growing export potential: helping businesses succeed as exporters

Key points

  • Important for local agencies to aim to:
    • improve company capabilities;
    • have a SME focus;
    • encourage an expansion of distribution (from regional to national to international);
    • introduce innovation - this is a vital aspect; and
    • 'build the pipeline' - assist new entrants to a mature status.
  • Challenges identified:
    • 3 year funding cycles are not long enough to produce sustainable results;
    • NZ remains a domestically-biased economy;
    • a major hurdle is NZ's low export participation rate;
    • There is minimal understanding of the importance of exporting;
    • NZ remains commodity focused - there is a need to leverage innovation; and
    • NZ's off-shore assistance is comparatively low.
  • offshore market intelligence is vital - need to feed this intelligence into product design and production stages.
  • International partnerships with foreign producers is an important option for many NZ exporters.
  • Also important to tap into global value chains.
