Key Points

  • New Zealand businesses need to be creative in attracting young talent.
  • Youth do not necessarily all behave in the same way.
  • Take key ideas from research, but test them with youth in your own regions.
  • The young are stakeholders in regional development -get them involved.
  • Provide them with business opportunities (develop business/industry partnerships).
  • Businesses regard skill shortage as a key barrier to growth.
  • Both the Pacific and Maori demographic is young. In 2001 39% of Pacific people were aged under 15 For Maori, 80% are under the age of 40.
  • By 2051 Pacific peoples are projected to make up 13% of New Zealand's total workforce.
  • There is a general lack of knowledge of, and aspiration to be a part of, economic development amongst the young, and a lack of awareness of the pathways to economic development.
