Key Points
- New Zealand businesses need to be creative in attracting young talent.
- Youth do not necessarily all behave in the same way.
- Take key ideas from research, but test them with youth in your own regions.
- The young are stakeholders in regional development -get them involved.
- Provide them with business opportunities (develop business/industry partnerships).
- Businesses regard skill shortage as a key barrier to growth.
- Both the Pacific and Maori demographic is young. In 2001 39% of Pacific people were aged under 15 For Maori, 80% are under the age of 40.
- By 2051 Pacific peoples are projected to make up 13% of New Zealand's total workforce.
- There is a general lack of knowledge of, and aspiration to be a part of, economic development amongst the young, and a lack of awareness of the pathways to economic development.
