Key Points

  • The Regional Partnership Programme is performing well against the Government's policy objectives, for example providing a greater strategic focus, extended networks and better central/local government alignment.
  • The Government has identified some areas for improvement. We need to: more fully engage with Maori in the Regional Partnership Programme, align with the Local Government Act for better planning, obtain greater advice and guidance from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) on best practice, better measurement for NZTE, and improved data availability.
  • Leadership is critical to good results.
  • Available statistics are giving a level of confidence that regional development initiatives are generating the right results.
  • Future developments will increase the value of current data.
  • Advice and policy are not as important as action at present.
  • Grassroots alignment of stakeholders is vital to build confidence and credibility.
  • We need a practical and pragmatic approach - it is more important that we do the right thing (rather than do it by the book).
  • Think about evaluation strategies up front.
  • Evaluation gives confidence that you are heading in the right direction.
